Brick sidewalks and cobblestone streets give Portland, Maine's largest city, a distinctive old neighborhood feel. There is always something going on, especially in the city's Old Port, a mélange of artisan shops, galleries, upscale boutiques and some of the best restaurants in Maine. Leave time for a spectacular cruise of island-studded Casco Bay.

The coastal resort towns south of Portland are great spots to sample fresh Maine seafood - whether you eat road-side at a lobster pound or feast at one of the region's many fine dining establishments. Two of the most picturesque towns are Kennebunkport, summer residence of the first President Bush, and Ogunquit, which has served as an inspiration to many famous artists.

Just north of Portland is Freeport, home to L.L. Bean and a countless number of upscale outlet stores. Further to the north and east is the Mid-Coast region, where you'll find Bath with its rich nautical history; Boothbay with its vibrant harbor full of yachts of every description; and quaint fishing villages at every turn.

As you start "Down East", you discover the postcard-perfect harbors of Camden and Rockport, which are home base to an impressive fleet of historic windjammers. Camden is also known for its historic seaside inns, many of which were once the homes of sea captains.

With 47,000 acres of granite-domed mountains, woodlands, crystal lakes, and ocean shoreline, Acadia National Park is a must-see on Mount Desert Island.

Speaking of islands, hiking the craggy cliffs of Monhegan Island and kayaking among the secluded cays along the Maine Island Trail are both unforgettable experiences. But there are some 3,000 coastal islands to explore, and we have too many favorites to mention here!

The Western Mountains and North Woods offer a totally different kind of adventure. Here, you can hike uncrowded trails or raft down remote sections of wilderness river with ample opportunities to spot moose, bald eagles, deer, loons and other native wildlife.

Maine's lake regions - from Rangeley in the north to Sebago in the south - offer beauty and solitude. These areas have also long been a gathering point for talented woodworkers, potters and food artisans.

Moosehead Lake, about 50 miles from the Quebec border, is Maine's largest lake. For the best view, you must head out on the water - the majority of its 350-mile shoreline is surrounded by forest. After a day of wilderness recreation, you can look forward to a hearty meal and luxury accommodations at one of the award-winning inns or mountain lodges along the lake.

Aroostook County, known to Mainers simply as "The County", is the state's northernmost region. In early summer, you can bike along endless fields of potato blossoms. The County is also the birthplace of cross-country skiing in America. Two world-class cross country skiing centers are located here - the Nordic Heritage Ski Center in Presque Isle and the 10th Mountain Center in Fort Kent.
